PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE BORDER: The Otis A. Aultman Collection
Sarber, Mary
El Paso Public Library Association, 1977
One hundred photographs selected from the 6000 negatives in the Aultman Collection, representing El Paso and Juarez between 1870 and 1940, the Mexican Revolution between 1910 and 1919, and various aspects of the Southwest around El Paso.
Otis A. Altman 1874-1943 travelled with the Revolutionary armies, often in specially designed boxcars, complete with darkrooms. He is said to have been Pancho Villa's favorite photographer in the early months of the war, a statement possibly confirmed by photograph 95 in this collection, which shows Villa seated at a small round table as he finished a bowl of ice cream in the Elite Confectionary, El Paso, 1911.
Aultman settled down to work as a commercial photographer in El Paso, dying in the studio which was also his home, on March 5, 1943.
Printed in an edition of 3000 copies and the plates destroyed. Set in Waverly type face, with titles in Tiffany, printed on 100 pound Quintessence dull enamel. Large hardcover in gilt stamped boards, no dust jacket. Slight fading on book cover edges. Condition: Very Good.
